Question by Charles: Will worms in a worm farm eat young coconut shells? If they will, how quickly will they eat them?
I eat a lot of young coconuts but I don’t like throwing the shells in the garbage, and since I live in an apartment I can’t have a compost pile. If I put a worm farm on my balcony, will the worms be able to eat one young coconut shell every couple days?

Thank you.

  1. Not likely. The shell is too hard by itself, it needs to rot, and they are very rot resistant by their nature. The shells would have to be ground to the size of coffee grounds for the worms to navigate through them.

  2. worms are decomposers, they eat nutrients good for them found in the soil, then turn it into excrement (plant food) YES worms can eat coconut shells but I wouldn’t give them till there (at least 1 week old) they might not be able to break the hard coding of the shell. Worm farms can cost up to 50$ . the worms can cost 12-15($ ). 1 pound of worms can decompose half a pound of organic matter in 24 hrs. don’t feed them pineapple or any citrus fruit, the a acid will dissolve them.

  3. How do they detect worms? Do you think they feel them moving under their feet,
… Bill-Pouncing then occurs, whereby the bill is thrust quickly into the
ground, ….. later and seemed to be gathering the coconut shell threads from
the liner. …. It will eat as many as it can and then fly off with a whole
    grape. …
