Question by We won! 20 Jan 09 (Erudite): Why are the foreign cars in Michigan being attacked by UAW workers?
Foreign cars (In Michigan) are getting kicked (Doors dented) tires slashed, and keyed all over Michigan. My Malibu chevy was left alone but the foreign cars around me were trashed.

  1. Don’t punish those CEOs that made the bad decisions, punish the car buyers that bought the superior quality cars.
Why don’t they go kick the wings off of their CEOs Lear jets? What a joke, too bad you didn’t post a link.

  2. Because there are calculations on the wages. Non-Union foreign car manufactures make less. It’s a proven fact foreigners have demonstrated a much more successful business operation whereby their workers AND execs are closer in pay, health plans and retirement packages.

It was outlined in a documentary where the entire amount of money an AVERAGE UAW worker gets for fitting a bumper–including hourly rate and benefits came to $ 72/hr compared to the non-union foreign car worker’s hourly rate of $ 45.

Even if those numbers didn’t tell it all, the cars made by Germany and Japan alone are smaller, more fuel efficient, last longer and are light years away from American gas guzzlers in overall economic value!

  3. Your Chevy Malibu didn’t need to be trashed…it already is trash.
Maybe it was just some kids screwing around and they felt sorry for your Chevy so they left it alone.
I’m sorry but 95% of American cars are chit. These automakers deserve to go under. I just feel sorry for the people on the assembly lines and the suppliers. It’s not their fault that management can’t find their ass with both hands. But those are the breaks. That’s how free markets work.

  4. The UAW has used these terrorist activities in the past to get their way during contract negotiations. They have been known to physically attack people that cross their picket lines and damage property. This should be incentive for Congress to reassess the bailout and allow the big 3 to either make it or fold. They will probably fold because of the UAW contracts and lack of willingness to compromise.

  5. Erudite, ole son…
The chickens are beginning to come home to roost…. This is but the beginnings of what will soon turn out to be absolute mayhem on the freaking streets. The government already knows this… this is why they have situated a number of returning units of the Army into ‘on call’ status for…. urban duty….
As tens of thousands of American workers are laid off… and, with the government in dire financial condition already with a major, record debt load…. there is no real way that they have of even supplying these newly jobless with the barest of the basics….. Soooo, it is going to get extremely testing in the… out and abouts… over this next while…

UAW just ‘shot themselves in the foot’ .. with this recent refusal to concede certain pay and benefits in order to see the ‘bail out’ come through…. so, they have no one to blame but themselves for the impending layoffs and plant closings to come….
However, the major ride that these people have had in the longest run… with rock solid pay and benefits… is over… and, that is not going to go down easy in this next while… We are going to see things in this next year… that we didn’t think we would ever see… on the American street !!

Buckle up, my friend, we are in for a long long hard ride down a steep and rocky road !!

  6. This has nothing to do with the UAW, it is a few hotheads who act stupidly, rather than the majority of UAW workers.
Contrary to some of the answers, Big Three cars are not crap, and in many cases match, or surpass the quality of the foreign cars you seem to prefer over American jobs.

  7. Why not ? Every one is crying there is no work . How can there be when all that we buy is from another country ? Sure its cheaper sure the people in those country’s work cheaper but there cost of living is cheaper . There rent ,home payments, food , everything is cheaper they can afford to charge less. For us to charge less that would mean everything come down , Farmers are going to have to charge less landlords charge less, phone company’s charge less comcast charge less . Everyone would have to charge less in order for us to compete with the world and i see the prices of nothing coming down so why just blame the auto industry . Keep outsourcing and soon we will be living in grass huts . Go after all big business that outsource and that’s what they are doing .

  8. the uaw was born from advesary relationships between workers and management.strong arm tactics are a trademark of unions.its kind of like extortion, except legal.now that unions have crippled the car companys, there is nothing left to take.the refusal of consessions by unions have left the workers in a no win situation.if they back the unions, they will bet their jobs that unions will extort the taxpayers into bailing them out.the money is gone, everyone else is already feeling the pinch.unions tell workers as long as we are united we cant lose.but reallity has set in,members of unions are feeling it also.they have been promised benifits beyond any reasonable accomidation.so the stalemate continues, frustration has set in,these people have negotiated themselves out of a job.the anger over foreign auto makers is understandable.foreign makers have show that without union extortion cars can be made at a profit.it can be done with unions dictating work rules.so lets get mad, denie personal responsibility, blame the successfull car companys.trash my neighbors foreign car.we have always gotten our way before, why cant we be unreasonable now.but the money is gone, all that is left is personal responsibility for the death of an industry(notice we arent on strike)

  9. The Problem is most of the Japanese
auto makers have more American made parts in the the the BIG 3 do. 75% foreine mad cars are built by parts made here. Where the big 3 have theres made over seas. Look at a new car and it will tell u on the sticker.Honda and Toyota have the most American made parts than any other company.U can Blame it on the Government and the UAW. There not for the working class.Let one of the UAW workers try living on $ 12.00 an hour. they can’t.I’m a family of 3 and can’t make ends meet. They make about $ 25.00 an hour with benefits. I do work in the Auto industre. I work in a stamping plant and were doing 40 hrs a week.So to u IDIOTS that like to damage cars try doing mine. I drive a Dodge B250 van thats 20 yrs old ond most of the parts are from over seas.So U sold out not US.

  10. The blame for the auto fiasco should be put where it belongs,on the shoulders of the ceo’s of the companies. When contract time rolls around and the union demands more benefits and wages the ceo’s give in and add the cost on to the new models coming off the line. They don’t say no because of the share holders and their cushy jobs, private jets and hugh salaries plus bonuses. The union members are tying to keep their standard of living.28.00 dollars plus benefits is not out of line with most of the crafts in my area. The retirement and health part is the real issue.Maybe Obama will come up with a national health program that will help the workers.

  12. If that is the case, they should sentenced to turning their title/vehicle over to the person who owns the vandalized vehicle.
