Question by Dawn F: Where can I find an inexpensive generator for a windmill?
My husband and I are considering putting a windmill in our yard to generate electricity, but don’t know where to find the generator to connect to the windmill. Where would we get one? We’re on a really tight budget and would like to get one as inexpensively as possible. We’d even be willing to build one, if that’s possible. Any and all advice is deeply appreciated! Thanks!
Additional details: My husband is the one who has done all the research and “studying”. He asked me to find out a place to get the generator inexpensively.

What do you think? Answer below!

  1. Any electric motor will generate electricity when turned by a physical source. Find a used 1/2 HP motor somewhere and try it yourself! Use a circuit tester to measure the current.

If you are on a tight budget, I doubt you’ll be able to afford a giant windmill. Do you have ANY IDEA how big one would need to be to produce a significant amount of electricity?

  3. There are many complications . Are u planing on AC or DC??? If there is no governors on the windmill AC is out. If u go to DC there are the big batteries and converters ,and regulators. Far too much money for a working person. U got a lot of studying to do.

  4. I have seen one on eBay advertised under wind turbines. They have the plans for sale, it is called a “breezy”. I have no idea if it is good or not but it sounds as if you can build it on a small budget.
