Question by : When to plant winter rye?
I want to plant a cover crop for my garden in zone 5. When would you plant winter rye in Indiana? My first frost is mid October. You start seeding blue/rye for your yard August 15-October 15.

  1. What’s good for Blue Rye is also good for other rye grasses, the sooner you get them sowed, the sooner they will germinate, depending on temperature and soil moisture.

  4. Plant the Rye in the fall after you have harvested your veggies. All it needs is time to germinate and come up before frost hit.
