The soil is full of glass and trash, though much less so now that we’ve sifted out so much of it. This summer it’s looking quite rich and clean and earthy. The mulch is warm and dark, seeds pushing up new shoots. After a good rain it’s so dark and lush, the ground could be in a forest somewhere, far removed from Brooklyn and its humans.

Question by Jen G: What to mix with garden soil for container garden?
I bought a bag of Miracle Grow Organic Garden Soil and after I opened it, I realized it wasn’t for containers. I’ve already read a ton of posts that you need to mix something with it or else the soil will compact and hold too much water. What I’m wondering is, what do I mix and how much? I’ve read everything from saw dust to peat moss so what would work best for vegetables? And what ratio do I add it to the garden soil? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
