Question by hotmail: What should I feed my dog with Gastroenteritis?
My Terrier has Gastroenteritis for the last 3 days and isn’t eating much. The vet told us that we should feed him boiled chicken and rice. But what are some other foods that we can give him?

  1. You need to direct all your diet questions to your vet. This can be a dangerous condition, and any advice you take from this site could cause your dog to get worse.

Call your vet and ask him.

  2. Not really chicken and rice are mild and contain all the nutrition hes needs till his tummy is better.

  3. bland food, you can do ground hamburger meat, but drain and rinse the grease, you can used boiled or baked potatoes instead of rice, cottage cheese, yogurt, some steamed veggies can be good too but I wouldn’t do that right away stick to the vet told you until you see an improvement in the stool, canned pumpkin (not the pie) can help firm back up the stools.
however you want to feed a lean meat, if it is too high in fat it can make the problem worse.

also keep a close eye for dehydration as well, http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2116&aid=1161 gums should also be pink and moist, if they fell tacky or semi dry that is a sign of slight dehydration. If your dog gets lytharic, also contact your vet if you see any blood in stool or vomit. There are many causes ranging from major to minor, I am thinking it is minor because you have already taken your dog to the vet.
