Shelly works with someone who knows a part-time turkey farmer. She raises free-range all natural turkeys. This was one of them. The breast was leaner and the meat a little darker, but the flavor was really good. She slit the skin and pushed garlic and herb butter under it and stuffed it with cornbread-country sausage-pecan dressing. A very nice bird.

Question by Joey: What is the best way to raise turkeys?
I was given 11 turkeys to raise this year and 8 of them died. I don’t know why or even what caused it. I have been told that if there isn’t enough room they will kill each other off. Another thing was that if they get bored them they attack each other as well. It was suggested too to put a large ball and hang cabbage so they have soemthing to entertain themselves.

Any ideas and suggestions welcome.

  2. Free range is the best way to raise turkeys. You can keep feed out for them as well. Be sure they have a good place to roost to keep them safe from coyotes and other predators, of get them into a shelter every evening. They will be healthier and happier turkeys and it should take care of them dying off.
