Question by Mondschein!: What if you feed the chicken with spoiled food, like mouldy bread, will it influence the quality of the eggs?
I all people i know who raise chickens feed them with bad food, like their leftovers or sometimes spoiled food: stinky meat, bread soaked in rancid fat, mouldy cheese, expired canned food and all kinds of nasty stuff.
I was just wondering, i think it will influence the quality of eggs too, because all the poisoning substances from the food would circulate in the body of the chicken, i think that the egg should have some too.
Do you agree?

  1. Anything that would make the eggs poisonous would probably make the chicken sick first, in which case it would probably stop laying eggs. So aside from certain special substances such as mercury or mad cow disease, which take a long time to have an effect, no, you don’t need to worry. And just plain rancid fat and moldy cheese don’t have extra mercury or prions. So I think you’re pretty safe.

  2. yes it would,
in fact if you feed quail hens on a diet deficent in certain vitamins you see that their embryos are highly deforemed.
What you put in strongly effects what you get out (same with human biology).

  3. I think it depends on what you mean by “quality.” If by quality you mean number, size, color, shape, etc. these would be HIGHLY influenced by their diet. For example, a certain diet can make the color of the eggs paler. And laying chickens subjected to poor diets often lay fewer, smaller eggs.

As to whether they’re poisonous, the poison would probably kill/maim the chicken first. This is not to say that the toxins cannot find their way into the egg — it just means that it probably can’t contain enough to kill you (quickly, at least). As for the longer term, I haven’t come across any studies but “garbage in, garbage out” as they say.

So if you absolutely MUST eat eggs from chickens with poor nutrition, you should probably do so in order to live another day. As soon as you are able, however, I suggest you avoid them.

  5. When I took a fish farming class the instructor said that the egg industry tried feeding fish products to the hens in an effort to increase the 0mega fatty acids.

The problem with that was that the eggs ended up tasting fishy.
