I have about 10 acres of pasture. Currently I have a few cows. I have thought of raising goats and maybe could make a little money.

  1. You might make a bit if you do your homework. Is there someone nearby who buys goats? Can you raise them for what they’ll give? What kind of goat is there a market for? Many different ethnic groups love goat but each seems to want a different size or breed. You’ll have to find out what they want in your neck of the woods.
Do you have someone who can mentor you with the goats? Goats aren’t as easy, in my opinion, as cattle. Goats are not grazers like cows and sheep but browsers like deer and some don’t do well on pasture, while others do.
Do you want to just produce meat goats or do you also want to be able to sell breeding stock? That takes even more research on your part.
I know a guy who bought really nice reg. Boer goats and then found that there was little call for breeding stock except from the top show herds and he didn’t want to show. He also found out that his customers preferred the dairy goat buck kids and wanted them at about 40 pounds. You’ve got to check to see what sells in your area by contacting local auction houses, feed stores, extension offices, breeders, vets, local ethnic groups, etc.
