Well it is mild here again as Florida gets hit with freezing weather ruining crops – Really what is going on?

(Download Original for best viewing) Virtual panorama of Leafy Greens, operated by farmer Tom Heess in the Salinas Valley, California on Thursday, June 16, 2011. Leafy Greens grows row crops of lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower sweet peas and seed beans. He uses rotational crop plantings to control weeds and plant disease. When a plot of land is at rest, he plants a cover crop of barley and rye grass (foreground) because the roots hold the topsoil reducing erosion of the soil. He is converting his irrigation system from conventional sprinklers (operating field behind large tree in the center) to micro irrigation (on fields not seen here). Where one system produces runoff and erosion (right of center tree) of the soil; the other has little or no erosion, less maintenance, easy harvest and less water is needed. When seasonal rains produce runoff, the silt that flows with it is caught in sediment ponds (far left, left and right of center tree and right of field being watered). The ponds have grass, bushes and trees to hold the structure and allow the silt to settle. Spillways lead to holding ponds and eventually the Salinas River (tree line behind the three trees on right) a tributary of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. So far, because of its design and efficiency, no water has made it to the river. USDA Photo Illustration by Lance Cheung.

Question by Trout: Well it is mild here again as Florida gets hit with freezing weather ruining crops – Really what is going on?
In the northern hemisphere it is accepted that Jan is the coldest month of the year — July the warmest

I wish I could remember exactly when — but Cdn Geese a migratory bird — no longer all migrate –

It is hard to miss a gaggle of Geese in Jan in a park in Canada

The grass is green again this winter — not enough snow cover to turn it brown — the earth soft enough to put a boot print into it

We just had a cold snap minus 10 or 15 I think — with the wind chill it felt like minus 20 according to the guy on the news …. and me too

But we now appear to be back to our new norm — thick sweater or a light jacket — hardly tee shirt weather but markedly warm for this time of year — and that has become a trend over the past 5 yrs

Jan and Feb thaws of a few days of warm weather which caused some of the snow to melt has flipped to become a Jan and Feb freeze for a few days

Flowers out of whack — migratory patterns changed — green grass

Florida gets hit with freezing temperatures threatening to ruin crops – Texas has a snow storm or two etc

The north seems to be getting warmer weather patterns the south colder

Really what is going on here ?

  1. Southern cons here in the USA can not comprehend it . I do hope they are enjoying the weather . Not .

  2. What we are enduring here is called an “Alberta Clipper” – a storm system that pushes cold air from the Northwest to the Southeast in North America.

This one is unusually long, cold, and far-reaching. It also means the temperatures north of the clipper are often warmer than those to the south.

It is Alberta Clippers that bring the rare but serious cold temperatures to Florida. If it wasn’t for these, Florida would almost never experience cold weather.

  3. You need to look at the size of the storm that is causing this. We used to get small weather systems but now we get cyclonic storms that can cover the whole continent.
This is because the global warming provides enough energy to drive huge storm systems.
Warm air is being drawn up the east coast into the Maritimes while cold arctic air is being drawn deep into the southern States from the prairies by the cyclone’s rotation.
You can think of it being initiated as a very large eddy on the edge of the Jet Stream but that is only a partial explanation.

  4. It is called climate change and it has been seriously sped up by the incredible amounts of pollutants spewed into the earths atmosphere each and every day.

Now for some reason, right wingers seem to think that no amount of pollution can damage the earth’s atmosphere. I guess that is why when discussing Global Warming, instead of talking about climate, they refer to the weather.

Of course it snowed in Texas the first week in January. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it won’t warm up and Texas will set record warm temperatures for the month of January. And it certainly has no bearings on the other 51 weeks of this year.

side note: while living in the Midwest all my life, I have also noticed a large number of geese that no longer migrate and live here year around.
