Walker Homestead: The Cantaloupe Scare

It seems like every few months, we have a food recall of some sort. Folks, this one is BAD. There are so many people who have been injured and even killed by eating cantaloupe. Think about it… cantaloupe. It’s a fruit that we love to eat here on the Walker Homestead but would never think about it killing us. People ask my why I do what I do. The truth be known: I could pick up a part time job and spend the time at the new job equal to the time spend on the homestead and earn enough money to buy 10x the produce I grow. I could buy green beans already canned, tomato sauce, and fresh cantaloupe.

  1. @mhpgardener : The Cantaloupe variety is Hales Best Jumbo cantaloupe. It’s an heirloom cantaloupe that I purchased from an eBay seller. I would like to save some seeds for next year. Actually, I would like to master the art of saving seeds. Makes me wish I had more than the 1/4 acre to grow on…everything crosses in such a small area. One day…

  2. Its getting to the point where you can’t trust anything that is store bought. The solution? Grow your own ! Nice cantelope too. What variety was that ?
