  1. Yes, we had these at our newspaper in Jacksonville for many years! I don’t know whatever happened to them… probably killed or something. It was very odd though, I never knew that happened elsewhere as well. There was this person who lived in a little old house across the street from the TImes Union (the paper), and I suspect he was the owner of the chickens. He’s gone from there now but his cats are still there if they aren’t strays. Maybe there are just people who like to have animals and let them wander around… I am almost certain it is illegal to own farm animals in the middle of downtown though. Very interesting question! I’d like to know more too!

  2. I live in a rural area and between me and my neighbors we have chickens, rabbits, goats, sheep, a cow, steers and belgian draft horses. I know several people in town with chickens and they are not kept secret. Mant small and medium size cities are changing their zoning laws to allow people to keep small flocks.

  3. I’m not sure, I’ve often wondered if I could have chickens in a coop in my supburb in upstate NY. fresh eggs are yummy.
people have rabbits and other animals, so why not chickens.
in fact, the lady down the street has a pet pig (with horns) that sometimes wanders into the road. it even bit a child, when the police were called they did nothing because the child was on the pigs property!!
