  1. I would suggest that you look at Jules Pretty (agri – culture) and there is a good definition of sustainable ag in there.

The whole point behind it tho, is to minimise reliance on fossil fuels, prevent further environmental degredation…. while improving output/yield.

It’s not so much new, it’s old agriculture, ie pre fossil fuels being used on such a large scale.

Those in the industry need to understand this due to the pressures of population (thus increasing food demand), while also the dimishing resources of P and K etc (tho this can be solved with reusing human waste, FYM etc but consumers don’t like this), soil erosion and dietary prefs.

Sustainable tourism, not something I know loads about but it just engenders the idea that the resorts source local people/local food and doesn’t destroy the environment where these people have lived. Eco tourism is a similar concept and there are lots of websites available if you google.

There are some fantastic new and old techniques from vertical farming, transition towns, integrated farming, integrated pest control, all of which can make agriculture more sustainable.

Industries that would be good to look at, and in conjunction with the tourism thing, would be shrimp in the mekong delta.

My final point is that it’s not just those in the industry who need to know/care, but if the consumers know and care then they can put pressure and vote with their money as to what they will buy.

those in the industry globally need to understand due to the pressures of climate change,

  2. I would look at Gene Logsdons book called “The Contrary Farmer”. He talks alot about sustainable agriculture but in a very interesting way to read. Im only 14 and have almost read the whole book wich I dont normally do. Good luck on your exam.
