Somebody please give me advise on starting a small farm?

Question by Marisa: Somebody please give me advise on starting a small farm?
I’m a teenage girl and I live with my dad. We’re going to move up north. I’ve already talked to my dad about goats. Are chickens a good investment? If you just get chickens without a rooster, are their eggs edible? What kind of fruits and vegetables can I grow over the summer? We’re in southern Ontario, which is in Canada if anyone doesn’t know.

  1. I would suggest practising by growing vegetables etc and then you can learn the best methods for the ground you are working.
Animals are a big commitments, and are quite hard to make a profit from unless there are thousands of them.

Farming is an increasingly difficult career, as supermarkets and other retail chains are pushing down the prices.

Then best place to look this up in the UK would be to contact the NFU (National Farmers Union). See if you can find a similar organisation in Canada and ask them, as they are going to be the most knowledgeable in this subject.

    Hope this helps

  2. Many colleges and universities have agriculture and horticulture courses. If you were not raised on a farm, its probably a good idea to be trained in this prior to making such an investment. Farming, orchards, vineyards, etc. are a major investment these days. Even small farms run in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and returns are modest even for a successful farm.
