  1. There are many sorts, and many questions you need to answer first.

AC or DC, how much power to generate, etc.

If all you are interested in is creating a low-power unregulated source, you could use three paper cups, arranged as an anemometer, and the center of this mounted on a small DC motor. As the cups turn, the motor will generate electricity.

More advanced than this would be to use a pair, or three wing-like structures, such as are seen on old dutch windmills, or those on early american farms. With this, you could use the DC motor, perhaps one of larger size than the previous expirement. It could be mounted directly to the shaft driven by the wings.

If you have a large enough windmill, you could use an alternator from an automobile as the generator. this would produce a bit more power, but you need a sufficiently large windmill to drive it.

  3. Dierdre is right. The design of wind turbine generators is a very intricate problem area, and there are a thousand design criteria you must determine.

You did not tell us the size of project you are considering. Do you want to build a 50 kilowatt turbine on a 200 foot tower, or a 1 kw turbine suitable for a remote cabin with a radio, CD player, and one or two LED lights.

The first issue in most cases is the average wind in the intended location. There are fewer places in the world than most people realize where the wind blows enough to make a wind generator practical.

Then you need to consider the design yield, tower height, power storage system, and many other issues. The electrical schematics are simple, and are the least of your problems.

I did an internet search on “wind turbine design,” which is what you should have done first, as well. There are large numbers of sites that will give you the kind of information you are looking for. That is the appropriate way to approach a question like yours.

    Good luck.

  4. if your interests are to experiment i would build a small unit , perhaps using cut in half tennis balls mounted on sticks mounted on a centre shaft of a dc motor, and the output wires of that dc motor connected to a simple multi meter to watch and monitor the potential of the wind supply in your area, if you want to get technical about your wind mill, basic rule of thumb, you need a good wind catch front, and least resistance back front, like for example the tennis ball , the open area is the good catch front, and the rounded area of the ball resists less being round, if you get into heavier wind collectors many other factors come into account, height will expose your proto type to possibly more wind, and more wind means more power, but basically, experiment, explore, and be part of the future s solution for natural energy…hope it helps.

  5. follow the steps to prepare a model

01 fabricate a fan of atleast 4″ dia of light material, such as aluminium/ paper/ plastic/ or if you are not able to do this, take out the fan from motherboard of any scrape computer, it is perfectly balanced.
02 Couple this fan to a rod called shaft, this shaft to be supported at atleast two places by miniature bearings.
03 between two bearings shaft has to be shaped as rotor, which will be place in a armature.
04 take out two wire connections and attached to a indicator bulb.
05 fix whole model on a frame.
06 through air on the fan to make it rotate on its axis.
07 as fan rotate electricity will be generated and indicator bulb will on.

  6. I’m putting together a small wind generator system in my back yard. There are pictures, wiring diagrams, and links available on my web page.
