Question by snoopy1: Recipes for homemade food to feed your chickens?
Does anyone have any homemade recipes that you feed your chooks?
Any pictures would be great.
I give my chickens mash and pellets but would like to vary their diet every now and then.

  1. Why not just add fruits and veggies???? The basic diet is complete and has all the nutrients that they need. Messing with it can cause problems with growth, development, and laying.

    They eat most anything.

  2. I just stuck with the mash, but supplimented with lots of veggies. I lucked out – I lived next door to an organic farmer who used to bring over totes of extra veggies. I’d give him free eggs and home baked goodies as thanks.

  3. Just give them fruit and vegies.
Also letting your chooks out for a few hours a day is always good.
Feed them some Oyster Grit too, it has calcium which makes the egg shell stronger. (Without this the eggs can easily break in your hands)

  4. There is no need for a recipe these birds will eat almost anything give them left overs from the table mashed potatoes breads veggies meats fruits most every thing you toss into the trash the birds will eat as long as the food is not spoiled give them berries watermelons tomatoes etc.etc a good scratch feed is also great if birds are 5 months old grit or oyster shell is needed for helping digest foods unless your birds have access to dirt then they will eat some of this to help with the process of digesting the foods.Any thing you eat the birds will eat NO onions or celery mine eat squash, tomatoes, strawberries, noodles, corn ,peas, potatoes, ham, chicken, beef, lunch meats, cheese, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, cooked rice, everything and anything I also let mine scratch and peck in the yard once a week for bugs and whatever they find to eat plus place grass into yard for greens and other greens as well.Mine stay out all day till dusk then return to coop for the night and released at day break FREE ROME.
