    Aquaponics is an economically and ecologically viable solution to our
    current petroleum based food system. Aquaponics utilizes the nitrogenous
    waste produced by fish production to grow plants in the very same system,
    eliminating the need for fertilizer or pesticides. Because it is a closed
    system, only about one tenth of the water is used compared to soil based
    agriculture, in addition to producing protein.
    A one acre aquaponics facility can produce up to 50,000 lbs of fish and
    100,000 lbs of vegetables per year. With yields this high in such a small
    area, the food can be produced in urban centers, reducing the amount of
    fossil fuels needed for transportation
