Question by Enigma_894: Is there a way to stop my dog from pooping everywhere in the backyard?
My dog just poops where ever she likes and its driving me mad. I know dogs don’t tend have a designated place to go to the toilet, but is there a way I can teach her to? When I see her about to take a poo, I usually move her close to a tree but this method isn’t helping at all. I hate to keep being on the lookout so I don’t step on poo as I go past the backyard to feed my chickens.

Any ideas?

  1. Try house training your dog 🙂 there is a way to get dogs to pee or poo in one place just by housebreaking him. Please take note that no amount of disciplinary methods will help and you need to be REEAALLY patient when housebreaking a dog.

  2. You are right. Unlike cats, dogs don’t empty in the exact same spot everytime. Best you can do is to fence off an area for her. But why bother? It’s easy to pick up immediately after she’s empties after all so you don’t fall into her mess all the time.

  3. Take her out on a leash to the place you want her to relieve herself and wait a couple of minutes, she’ll go. Also pick it up, and you won’t have to worry about stepping on it!

  4. The best way is to show your dog a spot that she has to poop in. If you want her to dump near a tree, SHOW HER. So, all you have to do is dump on a tree and the dog will do the same.

    Hope I helped.

  6. I know fencing off part of the yard and only put the dog in that part of the yard will work.

Dogs can be taught to go only in certain places, but I think that place has to be different in some way. For example wee-wee pads don’t smell like your floor to a dog. Maybe you could see if there’s something you could spray on the ground and the tree that would make the dog want to go there; ask your vet next time you’re there. If you can find / know a professional dog trainer they might know or have better ideas.
