Question by Sarah: Is it a bad idea to give a persuasive speech on organic food if the college you go to is an Agriculture school?
My school has ALOT of aggie majors..i live in oklahoma..and i have to give a persuasive presentation, i’m very passionate about organic foods and how they are healthier and better for farmers, etc. is it a bad idea to give a persuasion speech on this to a bunch of agg majors? please answer. if this is a bad idea i’m going to give my speech about organ donation
i know organic food isnt “agriculture”, its just most people in the ag department are learning about pesticides and how to use them and etc, and organic foods are all natural with no pesticides and such.

  1. Uh…organic farming isn’t “agricultural”?

  2. Why not. Agriculture is agriculture. Plus the challenge of a persuasive speech is to change people’s mind about things. If it’s good enough you can get a really high grade.

  3. Here’s a bit of advice from someone who’s been around for quite some time and has spoke in front of plenty of people. Don’t tell the audience what they are doing wrong and then try to convince them to go organic. Instead, talk about why YOU like organic, what YOU see as the advantages and how YOU feel. When you start your speech out telling the audience they are wrong, idiots, misguided, etc, you instantly put them on the offensive and they will never hear anything you say after that. With your kind of speech, use “I” rather than “you”. When you tell them that “I” like organic, even if they disagree with you, they will think, “Whatever pleases you.” When you tell them, “You need to be doing blah, blah, blah,” they are going to think, “Screw you, you idiot, I’ll do whatever I darn well please” and you aren’t going to convince anyone of anything. Good luck.

  4. So – I’m getting the impression that a lot of the OK state ag majors … what? make fun of people who are into agriculture? Only raise beef cows and use a lot of pesticides? Nah.

Organic crops are most definitely giving off a major radar ping in the ag subject area right now. You actually are in a position to affirm for someone else what they have already been thinking of – taking a step to alter an existing situation into the new trend. One or more of your fellow students will be in a position to make a decision that could be influenced by your dedication, so go for it to pass on the knowledge.

Actually you are on the right track and any person involved in agriculture worth their salt already knows this. You would be affirming what they already know, in essence telling them they are smart. They would probably be really interested on how to produce a money making organic crop with a lower weed- and insect-infestation using organic counter-measures than you’d think. Also to find out where the market is and how to access it – so they can plan to make money as Ag Major graduates.

Go ahead, give your speech, stick to your guns and embrace the pro-organic. I’d like to hear your speech 🙂
