Question by Beth C: I see small white worm on kittens bottom. He sleeps with me. found rice like things in bed.do people get thm?
I will take him back to the vet tomorrow. We have had him for two weeks.
Thanks to all who replied. My kitty has already had one vet visit. He was given Frontline for fleas and we haven’t seen any at all. He was wormed too, but I guess not for tapeworms. Thank you all so much for your help!!! He will be back at the vet’s tomorrow with a sample of what we found on his bottom!!

  1. He more than likely has tapeworms, which people can get, make sure you wash your hands well. Take a stool sample, and some of the little rice things, to the vet with you, they will help with diagnosis. The vet can give him some oral medication that will clear this up pretty quickly.

  2. Those are tapeworms. While you’re at the vet pick up some Frontline for flea protection. Cats get the worms from ingesting fleas as they wash themselves or gnaw at their fur. Remember even if your cat is indoors only, you bring fleas in on your shoes so she can still have fleas. I’ve rescued some pretty bad off cases and I’ve never gotten the worms but you should have them taken care of because it is possible.

  3. Regardless if you can get them or not, I would recomend he sleeps outside until it gets checked. And wash your bedding, and you might want to vacume and steam clean your carpet.

  4. Vet should be able to deworm your little friend as well as answer your questions.

  5. definitely a case of tape worms which are contagious to humans. Wash your hand with WARM water and SOAP. You might want to go to your doctor or make a bed on the ground for your cat. Bring the rice looking things to your vet.

  6. pin worms, and you too can become infested with them. They lay little eggs and if your rectum gets itchy better see your doctor. They usually come out at night.

  7. Those are tape worms. The segments migrate out the rear of the cat, then dry into little bits that look like rice. This is part of their life cycle. The vet will be able to give medication to him to get rid of them. Here is some info about them:

  10. That is Proglottis which is a tapeworm segment, it comes from fleas. The worm is in the flea and when the cats eat the flea by mistake, the tapeworm egg emerges and attaches to the intestinal lining. After about three weeks, the lower segment break off and can move independently, they leave the rear of the cat and hope to travel to the cats fur, if they make it, they dry up and look small, they want fleas to eat them because then the cycle can begin again. These segments can’t give you tapeworms, you can become infected if you eat a flea with a tapeworm egg in it only. Try to get the vet to prescibe some Revolution for cats, it works better than anything I have tried.
