Question by Megan: I have a few questions about raising ducks, can you help me?
This question is more for those who have/have owned ducks. Did/do you let your ducks run free around your house? (securing cords and other hazards of course) and also, do they have a natural stink to them like ferrets do? Do their feces smell really bad too?
Thank you!

  1. Aside from raising them in a brood pen under lamps, my ducklings are only indoors (in the laundry room) for a very brief period of their lives. Ducklings are very messy, and their brood pen would have to be cleaned daily. I would NEVER try to keep ducks in the house, much less let them run around! Please don’t try it, or you’ll have more of a mess on your hands than you can imagine!

If you want to get ducklings, you can start them in a brood pen (large rubbermaid tote or calf waterer) with lamps, but once they hit about 4-6 weeks, it’s time to move them to the barn, coop or other suitable enclosure. As they get older, they benefit from having access to a shallow pool or pond (don’t allow ducklings that still have their baby down get wet!), a small yard or pasture to forage in. We free range our with the rest of our poultry and close them in the barn at night.

They don’t have a musk like a ferret, but they are always getting muddy and they defecate all the time. Not an inside pet!
