Question by mygrandmarose2002: How much and how often should a 8-1/2 week old papilon puppy eat?
Sadie is 8-1/2 weeks old and has had 3 seizures due to something going on with her blood suger and protein levels. Right now she is taking 1/2 cc STAT twice a day and 3cc Condensed milk also twice a day with 1/4 tablet of tums with calcium disolved in water. The Vet told me to feed her chicken baby food for protein, but I was so upset that I can’t remember if he told me how much or how often. She almost died and that was just yesterday. We live in the desert and the Vet travels all over, catching up with him is difficult. Can any one help??

  1. Start with a couple teaspoons every two hours for the first two days or until you can get to the vet again. Then up a little at a time. to half a jar (you do not want the dog to eat heaping teaspoons, rather level spponfuls). I would vary it between the chicken, chicken and rice, beef, lamb and any other meat conatining baby food. Any with rice in it is good for your pup. Don’t give more than 5 teaspoons at a time though you do not want her stomach getting upset and causing her to throw up. That would make things much worse for her. Good luck.

  3. unfortunately, not. i was going to make a joke about feeding it what i feed my labrador puppy, until i read your sad details. so, i won’t joke. i’ll just wish you both well and recommend you call a vet that is around.
just b/c it’s not the same vet, you are still getting advice from a licensed animal dr. not a bunch of people online.

or try to find some veterinary websites and maybe post your question on there.
    take care.

  5. I had a teacup chihuahua with same problem. Keeping sugar in her water helped. Not too much sugar. Also, I kept a tube of nutrical handy. It’s a tube with vitamins and is sugar basted. They love it and it can be given everyday as a supplement. You can get it at pet stores or at the vets.

  6. Dogs are fed by calories . Your vet should be able to tell you the dogs calorie needs. You will then need to call the dog food manufacturer to see the caloriey count for that food.

  7. This is knowm as sugar debt…chihuahuas are very prone to as are all smaller breed dogs…your pap may very well have some chi in it…look at how similar they are…
She will need to eat at least 4 times a day…the chicken baby food is good, as is the turkey…give her a couple of teaspoons a day, like one in the morning and one in the evening. May I reccomend that you feed her Iams or Eukanuba…they are very balanced in their nutrients for those kinds of problems. You could mix the chicken baby food with the dry food.
Also…if she appears to be lethargic or shaky as if going into a seizure because of the sugar…keep Kayro syrup ( corn syrup ) on hand … dip the tip of your finger in it and let her lick it off…it is a quick fix for the sugar debt. It wouldn’t hurt to do that at least once a day anyway. Maybe about midday. They love it as a treat.
    Good Luck with your baby!!
