  1. you should keep it on there for atleast a few weeks. if they are one day old then there is a chance a few of them won’t make it. we always have a few of ours die. but while they are still small and fluffy they definately need the heat lamp. wait until they are bigger to take it out. if it’s to hott for them then they will move away from it. but if they are gathered under it all the time then they like its warmth.

  2. You should have your heat lamp on your chicks for about 6 weeks, and you should get a thermometer in the brooder ( the box they are in) so that way you can monitor the temperatures. For the first week you want it to be around 85 degrees F, and every week till the 6th week you make it 5 degrees colder (by raising the heat lamp).

If you don’t have a thermometer , your chicks will tell you whether they are too cold or too hot. When they are in group’s, huddling under the heat lamp and peeping , it means its too hot. If they are practically trying to escape, on the edges of your box its too cold.

When they are 6 weeks old, you want to switch to a pullet chicken feed, and ounce they are 20 weeks old, they can eat normal chicken food.

You want to keep you chick feeder always full. Chickens know how much they need too eat and usually won’t over eat,

    Good Luck,
