I seriously love that we can keep chickens within city limits.

Question by Silver: How does one raise chickens in their backyard?
I’m interested in raising chickens for consumption in my backyard. I’m tired of buying chickens, knowing all the hormones and crap that goes into them. I’d like to raise them myself, and maybe sell them if I have more than I need. How do I get started and what is the initial cost of it? Also, what is the ongoing cost and is it really worth it over the long haul.

  1. If you live inside the city limits of any town in America. Forget it.

They have laws that will not allow you to raise chickens in your backyard.

And the answer to the cost is not. It is not worth it. It will cost you far more in food to feed them than it will cost you to buy a chicken from an organic food market.

  2. First off, you need to check your local laws and ordinances. In most areas raising livestock in a residential area is illegal.

Next, you will need to buy the chicks, have their wings clipped, build a housing area for them, fence it in, and buy special seed/meal for them. I believe you will also have to get them shots since you’re going to consume them. It can be slightly labor intensive to start with.

Worth it? I don’t believe so.

  3. You can buy chicken cheaper than you can raise them but if you’re looking at it from a health view home-raised chickens are the best because they wouldn’t have unhealthy additives. First, check your zoning laws.
