Question by Chris C: How do you feed your home raised chickens?
I know chicken feed is meant to mean cost very little, but what do you feed them with and how much does it cost? Are you up on buying the factory raised eggs from the supermarket?

  1. We all buy factory raised eggs one way or another. Even if you buy eggs from the small farmer in the next town over like I do. Ever eat one of those (Mc)breakfast sandwiches that have an egg? Get dessert at a restaurant? The cakes, brownies, cheesecakes and such are all prepared with battery caged chicken eggs. Oder lasagna at the Italian joint? Made w an egg or two.

If you’re raising chickens for the pleasure of it feed them a good laying hen feed (fr farm supply/feed store) and lots of table scraps w any fruits/veggies/meat you want to toss in. Let them peck around for bugs. If you google ‘feeding pet chickens’ you will find more info than you ever knew existed.

  2. I feed my chickens cracked corn, whole wheat, whole milo, whole barley, whole sunflower seed, and molasses.

    Cracked Corn – $ 9
    Whole Wheat – $ 25
    Whole Milo – $ 11
    Whole Barley – $ 8
    Whole Sunflower Seeds – $ 35
    Molasses – $ 13

They also graze on grass and bugs that they can find. This is per month and it isn’t that expensive. I don’t buy supermarket eggs.

  3. In addition to the two posters above me, you can also purchase sweet horse feed from a tractor supply store that has weevils in it. They sell it dirt cheap, because they can’t sell it for horses, but the chickens LOVE the extra protein in the bugs.
