Question by nat c: how can you cool dairy goats off the summer?
It is really hot where i live and i can tell they all hate the heat.

  1. Goats generally have a thick mane of hair around their necks. First you should shave this area so they will be cooler. Next they need cold water, so if you can have ice to put in their water in the morning that will help. Also you can use a fan on them or make sure they have a cool shady place in a meadow under trees to graze…

  2. Brush them out to get rid of any of their undercoat that may still be there from their winter coat. I don’t recommend shaving because their summer coat actually acts as an insulator from the heat. The only reason to shave goats is if you are showing them, and shaved goats tend to have more problems with the heat than unshaved.

    We use fans in our barn to help keep ours cooler. They hate water so they won’t use a sprinkler or baby pool. Make sure they have some shady areas that they can get out of the sun.

    They should have cool (but not cold), fresh drinking water available, and also a salt block. You can also put electrolytes in their water on extremely hot days.
