We’re raising eight turkeys for Thanksgiving. The white ones are Royal Palm and Eastern Wild Turkey crosses. The brown ones are Bourbon Reds.

Question by miss_freecycle_andersonin: Does anyone know of any good sites about raising PET turkeys and chickens?
I am looking for sites and info about raising a pet turkey and a couple chickens my kids got. I have 2 ducks and I always can find good info on them but just not on these little guys. My son’s turkey is about 75 lbs big and needs a major diet change!!!
My kids and I are all vegan (very strict vegetarian) so we arent playing with our food 🙂

Im just trying to find out how to take good care of them.

  2. I grew up on a farm where my grandfather raised chickens and turkeys. They do not make good pets. Don’t play with your food.

  5. That is cool you have a pet turkey. I love turkeys and have rehabilitated a few of them. I am not an expert on raising them or keepign them as these were wild turkeys. I do know that yahoo groups has a pet turkey group and there is also some chicken groups there. Good Luck!

  6. I don’t know about sites but I know that Storey has a guide to chickens that is very helpful.

I keep one of these around for each type of animal I raise.

  7. Your son has a broad breasted variety of turkey. These type turkeys do not have a long life span.Mainly due to their weight.Diet change will not make any difference at this point. The broad breasted turkey literally has double breasts. They are a production meat bird. One reason they do not live long is the amount of weight they can gain.If you wish to have a turkey for a pet you need to get one of the heritage breeds.Wikipedia has good info on this type of turkey as well as most breeds. They also have extensive info on chickens. They even have inclusions for chickens as pets.
