Question by RSNAKE: building drought tolerant pasture & cover crop north texas?
I have planted many different types of seed,in pasture no go.latest was KY 31 Fescue. and specialized horse pasture seeds nothing.also cover crop for winter.

  1. Have you tried your neighbors or the extension agent in your neck of the woods? Local grain store may have some ideas.

  2. When did you begin doing this? Is your grass not emerging or not maintaining sufficient yield? Your best way to mitigate, or reduce, the impact of drought is to implement such practices before a drought occurs. If you began doing this in the last year or two you probably didn’t have the soil moisture needed to establish your pasture. What are your grazing/cropping habits on this land? Also, what is your long-term goal with your pasture? All of these factors will play a role in the type of management practices to implement.

    You have to keep in mind that developing a 100% drought-tolerant pasture is not possible because eventually you need moisture to sustain growth. However, if properly maintained and established prior to drought you can probably outlast a more conventionally managed pasture.

    I recommend looking to your land grant university, extension agency, and local holistic range management group or sustainable agricultural development group for better advise. Good luck!
