Ground level shot of those city chickens found off the 24th street bridge, looks rural from this angle, however behind me it’s very urban with homeless people camped out in boxes under the bridge.

I really think it would be fun to get one but I heard that it is against the law is that true?

  1. Yeah in most places it is, but some not, go to the Government Center and ask. In Rochester it’s no more than 3 in urban areas. We were in school and we kept hearing this chicken outside, the person who lives by the school has a chicken!

  2. Call the city and ask. In Southfield, MI it is legal but you have to have them a certain distance from neighbor’s houses.

  3. It depends where you live. I know there are some people in the US and UK who have had pet chickens in urban areas — few years ago, I saw a documentary on chickens with a section about a woman in Florida who had a pet chicken that wore diapers in her house. There could be a municipal bylaw prohibiting it, or at least setting out how and where it can be done. I suggest you contact your local city hall. But don’t just ask if it is legal, ask for the specific bylaws involved. Also, if you are in the US, there could be relevant state-level laws, which presumably will be online.

  4. There is a difference between having one as a pet and owning a bunch of chickens. Most cities will let you keep on if it is an indoor pet. There are regulations in every city read about them, They are regulations about the amount of dogs, horses, bees, every town has different Check with your own. Towns are making too many regulation about everything fences, storage barns. Now days they don’t trust people to use their own common sense.

  5. I live in MD & was told I could only have 3, I now have 15 and no has complained. If I end up with a rooster I re-home it so the neighbors don’t get upset.
