  2. The answer is C, green manure. These two terms refer to different aspects of the same crop. A cover crop is grown on the bare land between main crops, so that the land is covered by vegetation and not left bare (eg. ‘winter cover crop’). This helps the soil retain its microbial life (which is nourished by the root exudates), which means the soil does not lose its organic matter and moisture. The cover crop also takes up soil nutrients and so avoids nutrients being leached out of the soil during this time.

However, when the farmer is ready to plant the next crop, the cover crop is ploughed into the soil and becomes a ‘green manure’ crop.’ ie. as it decomposes, it slowly releases its nitrogen and other nutrients back into the soil, to nourish the growing main crop, and the released carbon builds up the soil organic matter level and improves soil structure (ie. it performs the same functions as applying an animal manure).

  6. it’s green manure…because the cover crops will serve as fertilizer that’s why called green manure..example for this is peanut…you don’t harvest the peanut but let it decompose in the soil…the crops used as cover crops are usually rich in nitrogen such as leguminous crops (beans).
