Mittleider Gardening Method: Swimming Pool or Garden?

Have I gone nuts or do I just love gardening? We are converting the rest of our backyard to raised garden beds! Yes, that means my entire backyard and south side yard are dedicated to either vegetable gardening or fruit trees. I have been evaluating the Mittleider gardening method for the past year and half. I feel it is the best gardening method because it: 1. can be used almost anywhere 2. used in any soil 3. without adding soil amendments 4. is easy to do 5. yields up to six times what other methods have yielded 6. is inexpensive compared to other methods 7. uses natural mineral fertilizer 8. is organic. Take a look at our backyard layout and let me know what you think. Should we lay it out differently, use a different method of gardening or forget the whole thing and put in a swimming pool? 3. Mr “L” (and Mrs “L” also) – Go Team Go! 1) Don’t you need a greenhouse in Houston? 2) How about some rabbits? Neighbors will never know and they provide great fertilizer. 3) How about a composting toilet? – maybe put it in your shed. Looking forward to the vids as you go about this. THANKS! Ken.

  4. I think it will be better to stock up on the ingredients for the fertilizer formula than all the store bought in a bag fertilizer. Mittleider method is great. I am looking forward to the videos on how you do this.

  7. If you put in a pool you better be doing it to raise some fish lol. I love raised garden beds and I think you will be very sucessful with what you are doing. I also liked mskypreppers suggestions with going up! Espeically putting the gutters on your fence. We are right now in the process of trying to convert over to raising/growing at least 90% of our own food. Keep up the good work, and God bless!

It has been emptied and is ready for her to take it away, more garden space. And I bet the earth worms will be thick under that tarp liner…lol Here we come fishy fishy!…lol Then a BIG garden next year. God bless.

  9. Thank you so much for sharing all of your preparation you and your family are doing. You always share a wealth of information and I just wanted you to know how much we appreciate it!

QQ: So if I understand, you are going to use newspaper & cardboard to eliminate all the grass, build eleveated beds (8-12″ tall???) filled with sawdust and sand, and then feed using the Mettlieder method of gardening… Off I go to read up on this method!

  11. As much as you can. You have to test your plants in your yard to see what grows. But as a rule the more the better. But if you only get 1/2 day of sun or less plants will grow.

  12. One more question…. Did you say weed free gardening??? How is that possible? Will you have to mulch the whole thing like you did around your fruit trees? Any help is appreciated!!

  14. I would not be calling you crazy, I would be calling you brilliant. Grow what you want to eat and eat all that you grow. I think our grand parents and great grand parents had it right 80-100 years ago.

  17. The people who think you’re crazy now will be the first ones at your door with their hands out… I’m not a “religious” person, but within the last year especially I keep getting reminded of Noah. I am dealing with opposition from all sides and I’m new to this lifestyle but I keep going, and I’m preparing to feed the very people (family&friends) who think I’m nuts. I already have chore lists for them… 🙂

  18. wonderful videos for teaching. I’m using the bucket system and I believe you will find the more you learn and make these video, you may find that this could be your calling. Not crazy because you will enjoy your home much more by spending time in your garden. I’ve have done the same and at first friends can worry about your mental state but after seeing the miracle, most of them will join you. Keep it up. By the way if you use earth worms, em and rock dust you can have a cheaper way to do it.

  22. The problem we have here in Houston is foundations moving because the soil dries up and shrinks. They say the best thing you can do is keep the ground we year round. This should help. Although the Mittleider method uses very little water. But the wood chips will help to retain the water on the isles and keep the soil in the isles moist. But because of the chips it’ll be dry under our feet.

  23. That is what is great about this. We don’t have to worry about grand kids falling into the pool 🙂 There is plenty of play space around the beds in the isles. It reminds me of the Matchbox car town my mother made that we would drive our Matchbox cars around on the roads.

  24. We do a lot of canning and giving away. We don’t do too much freezing being we are trying to learn to use less electricity, just in case.

  25. Never heard of the Mittleider Method – I’m excited to check it out. I’m evaluating tearing up my front lawn to turn into a garden, but I’m working with ZERO dollars to do so. I’m not sure if I want planter boxes, raised rows, or just to put down wood chips and wait until early spring to start planting vegies… Keep up the good work!
