Question by Sean: How do you connect the rotor part of a windmill to the generator(DC)?
I have this windmill project in which I have to make, with my teammates, 4m by 4m windmill. I’ve got an exquisite design but what I want to know is how to connect the rotating part of the windmill to the generator? I’m not sure if you have to connect one rotor to the other or what to do. Please help!

  1. you need a gearbox to change the speed of the shaft. The windmill will rotate slowly, perhaps 1-2 per second at best. The generator has to rotate much faster, how much faster depends on the design.

You may will also need some sort of clutch to engage and disengage the generator from the windmill, but perhaps not for your simplified design.

Big question is the generator. Perhaps you can get a auto alternator from a junkyard for a few bucks. It will already have a pulley on it, but that won’t be enough of a step up. Visualize how fast a car engine rotates. You need to gear the windmill up to that speed.

Gearbox design will be tricky as you have to keep friction to a minimum or the wind will never turn it.
