What is ‘’organic farming’’?
The most common of ‘’organic farming’’ is farming withouth chemicals’’.This definition is not stricly true as it doesn’t give the whole pictures.
As a matter of fact,all living or dead things are made up of chemical compounds.Therefore organic farming does use chemicals,though naturally derived,in plant protection,fertilizing and livestock husbandry.However,it is a system which tries to avoid the routine use of chemicals and to exploit natural renewable resources.
The principles of organic farming are expressed in the following document of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement(IFOAM):
-to produce food of high nutritional quality in sufficient quantity;
-to work with natural systems rather than seeking to dominate them:
-to encourage and enhance biological cycles within the farming system,involving microorganisms,soil flora and fauna,plants and animals;
-to maintain and increase the long-term fertility of soils;
-to use,as far as possible,renewable resources in locally organized agricultural systems;
-to work as much as possible within a closed system with regard to organic matter and nutrient elements;
-to give all livestock conditions of life that allow them to perform all aspects of their innate behaviour;
-to avoid all forms of pollution that may result from agricultural techniques;
-to maintain the genetic diversity of the agricultural system and its surroundings,including the protection of plant and wildilife habitats;
– to allow agricultural producers an adequate return and satisfaction from their work including a safe working environment;
-to consider the wider social and ecological impact of the farming system.
These principles are the bais for day-to-day farming practices for organic farmers all over the world.
The United States Department of Agriculture has given the following definitions of organic farming:
Organic farming is a production system which avoids or largely excludes the use of synthetically compounded fertilisers,pesticides,growth regulators and livestock feed additives.To the maximum extent feasible,animal manures,legumes,green manures,off-farm organic wastes,and aspects of biological pest control to maintain soil productivity and tilth,to supply plant nutrients and to control insects,weeds and other pests.
From the above definitions it is evident that organic farming has the aim of protecting the fertility of the soil,relying on crop rotations,and organic manures,controlling weeds,diseases and pets,using natural predators and disease resistant varieties;recycling organic material including crop residues and livestock wastes;producing nutrirional,healthy and high quality food.
Many farmers are converting from conventional to organic farming s they begin to be aware of the fragility of the earth’s environment,the pollution from pesticides and fertilizers,and the toxic residues in food.
