Question by Abigail: What do I feed a 8 week old Boxer Puppy to ensure optimum growth / health?
My boxer wont eat complete mix foods and ignores them completely. He is now on a milky meal for breakfast of goats milk and omega 3 eggs made into scrambled eggs. then 3 meals of tinned Butchers with trripe that the breeder had him on with added mixer or pasta or boiled rice. Can I do anything else to aid his health? what about raw steak as a treat?

  1. I would never feed a dog raw steak and certainly not a puppy. You should ask the breeder for further advice or if that is not available pop into your local vets and ask for some advice.

  4. No no no!! A raw steak would not be good for him. Please do not feed your dog eggs everyday chick!! They are good for them in small doses and not scarmbled.keep them raw. And he is only a puppy which will make him have a sore tummy. I know its cruel to be kind and most people will tell you he will eat when he is hungry but maybe he just really doesnt like it. So what I think you should do is give him his complete and put dog meat in with that. If he still turns his nose up then just completly take him off the biscuits. You could also try grating a bit of garlic over it, dogs love the smell of garlic.!! So all in all if he dont eat the biscuits give him meat and on the odd occasion put eggs through his meal. I hope this helps

  6. Wow he is a spoilt little man..

Try complete food mixed in with gravy as he Will get all his vits etc from the complete dry food

He is a little too young for rich foods like pasta etc

When he is about six months old try frozen tripe from the pet shop as this will bulk him out but you will need to decrease his other food to allow for the tripe as you will end up wit ha fat dog which puts pressure on his soft bones etc

You can also buy vits for dogs and i would suggest that rather than cooking him a complicated diet

I would not advise raw meat as a treat and i would never give dogs raw meat

The old wives tale you feed dogs raw meat and they get a taste for blood has stopped me from doing that

Speak to your vet for further advice and good luck with your boy

  7. three eggs a day is far too many, limit it to one. And never give a dog raw eggs as they can be poisonous and cause gastro problems.

Pedigree complete diet is rubbish food, and apart from making him hyperactive, it may go straight through him and cause diahroah.

What you are feeding him sounds ok, but he will need an added mixer for his teeth. At his age he needs two milky meals with goats milk and two meat meals ie: the tinned tripe together with a mixer biscuit.

If you want to vary it you could try him with some delicious home cooked dog casserole, made with meat, vegetables and pasta, not too much boiled rice though. I cook up a big batch twice a week for my dogs and put one in the freezer, and add it to their complete diet. It has never failed me and I dont have any dog turning their nose up at their food.

No need for raw steak, it wont benefit him in the least. If you want to give him a treat, try some boiled breast of chicken.

  8. buy a premium dog food and stick with it. I have owned boxers for years and feed them canadea. They have all done very well on it. If he ignores it and some of what your feeding him now with the dry dog food and slowly wean him to just the canadea.

  10. He will eat complete dog food if you leave it down for no longer then 20 mins then remove and do not give him any thing untill his next meal time and i mean nothing. He will not starve and will learn that he only gets one chance and to make the most of it. Royal canin do a special diet just for boxers which has everything he will need. You could start by adding a little warm water of a little dilute gravy to the food and wean him off it once eating it well.

  11. I think what you are doing so far sounds good enough for him. Dont force him to eat however, the pups i have worked with have refused to eat before just give him time.
If you are not sure i would suggest to give the breeder a ring, or buy a book on Boxers! I done this when i brought my border collie as i had no idea what was the idel nutrition for her as i had never had a collie pup before.
    I would suggest this book

I have read it before and found it interesting!
Also dont give your dog raw steak!!! It might not be too good for his developing digestive system

  12. If my experience of Boxers is anything to go by, he will simply help himself to whatever he fancies. Pillows, slippers, carpet, your dinner, underwear, policemen’s bums, Christmas decorations, the odd photograph…

  13. I found Beta puppy worked when my dog was a puppy. It had all the stuff she needed to grow but was not too rich as to upset her tummy. No way give the puppy raw steak or you will regret it when he has accidents all over the house because it is too rich for him.

  14. A high quality puppy food is what he needs. What you are feeding is not going to give him all the nutrients he needs as a growing pup and can end up causing growth and developmental issues. If you stick with a food, he will eat it. He might fuss over it for awhile but he won’t let himself starve. You can try adding some warm water to soften it up and make a little gravy of the food itself if he is really stubborn. Something like Royal Canin, Merrick, Wellness, Innova, Timber Wolf, etc are all top quality foods.

  15. I would not give steaks to dogs as they will become dependent upon that and will not entertain dog food. There is a formula powder in the dog center for puppies to help them gain weight it is just like babies powder milk and the dog will grow quite fast on that. Also weetabix helps bring dogs on . Try omega dog biscuits and pedigree dog food just a small amount. Its not the meat that gains weight it is the biscuits. Then give them treats such as pigs ears and chews.

  16. i have a boxer who is now 8 but has always been fussy eater, i would make sure you are feeding him puppy food as this has the nutrients he needs as a puppy, have you tried soaking the complete food then mixing with the butchers. this is what i found worked with mine and then gradually ween him back on to to dry as this is essential for good dental health.there is no harm in mixing the complete with the butchers if it tempts him to eat it.
