Question by Lucille: What are some good degrees in agriculture?
is agriculture really a wasteful degree to seek or are there any specific ag degrees worthwhile. I am wondering about the following, let me know which ones will get me any money or be worth it:
-agricultural business BS degree
-agricultural:farming and ranching management BS
-agricultural: horticulture and landscape BS
-soil and crop sciences BS
-agricultural economics BS degree
-agricultural education BS degree
-animal science or equine science

p.s. i do not own or have a farm, i simply love agriculture and animals, i am just skeptical to get a degree in it if it is a waste of four years. what do y’all think?

  1. I can tell you that no degree in agriculture is wasteful. Some degrees that may be more worth while than others are
    Agronimy
    Animal Science or Equine Science
    Agriculture Education
    Agriculture Economics
They all offer financial and job security with benefits!
But if you want to be around animals I would go with Ag-Ed, Animal Science, or EQ Science.

  2. Go to the career office at your prospective university or talk to professors in the field and ask them. Also talk to some employers and see what they’re looking for. Look on job boards now and see what jobs are posted and what you might be interested in, then pick the path that leads you there.

There’s a lot of opportunity in agriculture and a small pool of qualified people as not enough young people are going into that area right now. I think the job market will be pretty good for you.

  3. A degree in agriculture is never a waste of time. Everyone eats. Agriculture is the largest economic sector and employs over 1 billion people in the world. Food production needs to double by 2050 to meet a growing world population. Moreover, the challenges facing agriculture include increasing food production and yet at the same time be sustainable and environmentally friendly. In other words, agriculture isn’t going away but extremely important.

Since you love agriculture, your dilemma isn’t whether a degree in agriculture is worth pursuing but rather which degree in agriculture is best suited to your interests. All the degrees you listed are good choices, but you should be aware that degrees specializing in economics and business may not get you so much directly involved in the hands-on crop/animal production because these degrees are more related towards management and policies.
