  5. Lathe bedways I was always taught only two things should be placed on this
VERY important part of the machine….OIL and the lathe
    SADDLE…….anything else you’d get a written warning for……besides you
have a headstock or even better a workbench for everything else!!!!!

  7. Thanks for uploading this… I’ve always wondered how they make the lead
screws for lathes, since working on them as an apprentice back in the
1980’s… A bit of a chicken or egg situation, but this video makes things
    clearer.

  8. if your screw cutting arrangement and gearing allows it they can be
screwcut in the normal way, I have cut a 60 mm diameter 6 mm pitch
    Trapezoidal double start leadscrew.

  11. @rlewis1946 Well, yes and no: the heat dissipates throughout the whole mass
of the rod; the bigger the rod to turn, the less heat remains in the
contact (working) area. The smaller the rod, the more it’ll heat up. Plus,
many inserts are nowadays heat resistant; from the shavings produced in the
video it doesn’t seem it’s chipping deeply, so even less heat generated.
I’m just talking from personal experience, not answering from their side. 😛

  17. It appears as though this operation is being done without the using any
coolant. How is that possible, considering the amount of heat generated by
the cutting process? Thanks for posting – fascinating video. Roy Lewis
