Our chicken yard has been really muddy all winter, so I’ve been letting them out into our own backyard for the past two weeks, so they can eat grass. They stay very close to the chicken coop, and never go far. but today our neighbor dog came into our yard, killing six of our chickens, and leaving the other six near dead. I was so pissed I called them three times today, but they never answered their phone. Should I go over there? I already know it was their dog, as I saw the owner drag him out of our yard. Should I go to their house and demand they pay? I don’t really want to make enemies with them, but their dog did kill our chickens.. Also, the dog bite the back of my leg a few weeks ago, when I went to bring them eggs. Not too bad, but still…what should I do?

Call the cops to report it and you can get the neighbors to reimburse you for the cost of the loss of the chickens.

Since they are not answering the phone, I would call the police and have them pay a visit. They are 100% responsible for cost of the lost chickens.

If they are going to become enemies of yours simply for being asked nicely to pay damages, they were never your friends in the first place.

This happened to my family when I was a teenager. Neighbors dog came over, killed some chickens, we caught the dog and returned it, did not ask for payment, just that dog did not return. Less than a week later dog was back, killed a few more chickens, once again caught and returned to neighbor with request that the dog not return. The third time that dog showed up, he died. His owners came by about a week later, looking for it. Sad to think that if they had prevented their dog from running, it would not have had to die. Their dog will be back, once they start killing they always seem to come back. If you can catch the dog, do so and then call the cops and let them deal with it. As far as getting money for damages, You should at least let them know the dog killed your chickens, and that you know it was their dog. If they are good neighbors they will ask what they owe for the dead chickens, and pay up. Kind of think they are pretty crappy though as they retrieved the dog, and did not approach you to ask about paying for damages. Sounds like they have no problem making enemies with their neighbor. You could go over, knock on their door, and simply tell them what you know, make sure you let them know their dog is not allowed on your property.

Yes, I would go over and speak to them. They are probably too embarrassed or scared to confront you, and think if they ovoid you, you might forget it or not know it was their dog. I wouldn’t call the police, and don’t go over angry or demanding. Just speak to them calmly and nicely, they are probably upset about it too, and though they are responsible for their dog’s actions, it is not their fault their dog killed your chickens. Try to reach an amicable agreement, as these guys are your neighbours and you have to live with them as long as you live there, but I think they should pay to replace them – or at least share the cost. However, I would also say you should also take responsibility for the safety of your chickens, in the future and put a fence around your property. IMO this is very sad, you both have some responsibility. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional, so it’s not worth making lifelong enemies with your neighbours over a few chickens. They should replace the chichens and you should ensure their safety in future, and fence your backyard, if you plan to let them out.

Thank you for not shooting the dog BUT they should do something about the dog. and they should pay you the cost of the chickens and they should talk to you about this. And thank you for TRYING to talk to them . So now phone the police and see what they can do good luck on this
