Question by Deanna: Is a goat rescue a good idea?
I have been to so many auctions where goats are infested with lice, walking bones covered with skin, bleeding from fresh wounds, trying to walk with fractured or broken legs and I feel so sorry for them. I have been around goats for 20 years and have raised goats for 7 years, ranging from the little Pygmies & Nigerians to the huge Boers & Kikos. I have learned how to treat them over the years and how to manage goats very well.

I have searched the internet in my state and noticed there are no goat rescues in Tennessee. So I was thinking, “Why not.”. I have the land, the know how, the love and the means.

But I was wondering what people would think about a goat rescue?

I also have a family friend who is a vet and he has offered to treat the goats at half cost for the cause.

I know goats are mainly thought of by most people as livestock, but over the years I have noticed they make wonderful backyard pets. And I have had a few who could be house broken. I myself even trained a very small Pygmy to go to her extra large litter pan. : )

I was just curious of what everyone might think of this idea?

  1. I suppose they would make excellent rescue animals, they can climb mountains with ease, oh do you mean wayward goats? I never realized there was much of them running loose, but I do know that Middle Eastern and Mexicans love to eat Goat , maybe you can sell the ones you rescue and make a profit

  2. I think that is a great idea. When I decide to get a new pet I always check with rescue groups first. With a lot of goats you can get into goat soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion–you could sell these things to make money for your rescue group. Also, be sure to register with PetFinder.com!

  3. Any animal is worthy of rescue from horrid and oppressive conditions.

If some people can’t understand, or don’t get it… well, so what, the goats sure will!

You seem like you know what you’re doing. You could place the goats in good, new homes too.

Goats are valued in all places of the world for their milk and other positive attributes.

There used to be a magazine called “The Dairy Goat Journal” you might put a small classified in that magazine for support and a way to make home placements for rescued, healthy goats. Also, you may find some contacts through 4H clubs and chapters.

I think this is a great idea… I say go for it!

  4. Just make sure you don’t have any Indian, middle eastern, and Asian neighbors.

  5. I thought of a pet goat as a passing idea, but don’t have the land. Goat rescue is a wonderful idea. Many people don’t appreciate certain animals until their consciousness is raised. You can help raise awareness. I belong to a rabbit rescue group & we are still working hard at raising awareness.

People here in California are renting out flocks (herds?) of goats for brush trimming, so there are commercial applications for a rescued flock.

  6. Yes,
I had two goats and just lost one. They are wonderful pets with big personalities. I never thought that goats would make such nice pets. I retired to the country with my husband and I wanted animals. I never would have guessed that I would have goats, but I did and I am going to get another in the spring so that Hershey is not lonesome. He does interact with the horses and donkey but I think another goat for him would be nice.
