Question by ___²: In california, can chickens be kept as pets in backyards?
I live in the suburbs of northern california and am planning on getting a chicken as a pet, of course.
It will stay inside at all times until 10 weeks, then will stay outside 8-3pm in the day and spend the rest of the day and night inside.

I do not want to get this chicken and have to give it away.

  1. I think so. I grew up in LA and lots of people had chickens and they were in the city.

  2. I’d imagine so, just don’t let it escape

  3. I was born and raised in Louisiana and chickens and quail are pets everywhere. Please check with your city hall in California.

  4. It depends upon your city and county zoning regulations and varies from area to area. Most cities allow small backyard flocks of hens only (10 or under) and NO roosters. There are “nuisance” laws which cover cleaning, noise and odor abatement requirements as well. Most cities prohibit keeping roosters, so if your “pet” chicken is a rooster chances are good that it will be illegal. Hens, as I stated, are widely allowed however.

If you’re outside city limits and in the county areas the regulations are a lot less, but you still need to find out how you are zoned to see exactly what is and is not allowed to be kept on your property. Fowl are widely allowed, other animals may be less welcome.
