I mean, do I just hook up the main water line to it, and another line from the end of it and run it to my house, (I was thinking just run it into my old hotwater heater for storage puposes and I can keep the electric power that heats it up off)?

  1. the water is pumped from the bottom of the storage tank through the solar panels then returns to the tank either half way up or higher ( depends on the tank ) . Of couse if your existing storage tank is not designed for this then your going to have to get the right tank and the pump .
Also any pipe work that is exposed to sunlight needs the UV resistant . Insulation needs to be minimum 15 mm thick .

  2. I agree with Barnaby Joyce.

A solar heater is not fast, so generally you would have a small pump to circulate water up through the heater slowly when the sun is up, and store the hot water in an insulated tank, usually larger than the existing water heater. The preheated water then goes through your normal water heater, which might never need to turn on. Some water heaters are designed for this kind of connection already, and you might not need an additional tank.

It could be worth asking a professional installer to help you out on this. Then you’ll be sure you’re complying with local codes.
