I found a tiny worm on my bed. It appears to be a reddish color. I have no idea what it is. I never saw anything like that before. I do not have any pets and have no idea where it came from. After stripping down the sheets, I did not find any more. Does anyone know what it is? Is it harmful? How do I make sure that there are not anymore? Thanks.

Ellie, thanks for the information. I don’t think that is the problem though. The one I saw was definitely red and I don’t have any symptoms of a parasite. However, I do appreciate the information.
Robin, I didn’t get a long enough look at the worm. I was thinking far enough ahead to consider identifying and got it rid of it rather quick. It was predominantly red though. I noticed somewhere people suggesting it may be larvae from a clothes moth or carpet beetle. I think you may be onto something there. Was there anything you did to get rid of them and make sure they don’t return?

I dont know what it is. But its not a herpes worm…. That’s just messed up.!

There is no such thing as a herpes worm!!!
The most widespread kind of “worms” which affect humans are threadworms or pinworms, but these are not red. They are like cotton threads and are easily visible in stools. If you did have threadworms you would experience symptoms like anal itching at night-time. Have a look here for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinworm
If you are concerned about parasites, you need to visit your doctor who should be able to determine this by a simple blood or stool test.

Don’t panic!
About 5 years ago, we noticed some little red ‘worms’ in our house, which is a 15th Century thatched property, with plenty of ancient wood. The larvae are approx 5/6mm in length, orangy-brown smooth body with six orangy-transluscent legs on upper half and a dark brown-black head. Does this sound like one of your ‘worms’?
We contacted Insect Information Services in the Entomology Department of The Natural History Museum in London.
Mr Lee Rogers told us that these were very likely to be harmless predators of wood-boring beetle larvae, so are in fact beneficial. The scientific name is Anthocomus rufus (Coleoptera: family Malachiidae) or some other species in that genus.

I just found a tiny orangeish worm in my bed. I don’t know if it could have come from my dog.

I live in KZN South Africa in a thatched, 6 bedroomed house with no ceilings and those same little red worms with either black or brown heads often fall on me while I’m asleep, and durimg the day. And they bite! HMH KZN Midlands
