After yesterday’s farmers’ market, Son #2 and I stopped at one of our local farms, ostensibly to buy lettuce, but really to play with the chickens… Blogged.

Question by piplong2005: How much flax seed to feed to chickens?
I have 27 laying hens and one rooster that have been raised more or less organically. Though it is mid-December they have continued to lay for us with the help of a heat lamp. We would like to start supplementing their layer feed with flax seed to increase the omega 3s in the eggs. How many pounds per fifty pounds of layer do we need to feed? What is the accurate amount to feed per chicken? Any input would be appreciated.

  1. Try offering them free access to flax seed. They will know how much to eat. Maybe a bird feed mix such as True Value bird seed that has flax in it a plus will be multiple seeds added to their diet.
