How is it like to be married to a Turkish man as a foreigner?

Question by Luckie: How is it like to be married to a Turkish man as a foreigner?
I’d like to hear from women who are foreigners living in Turkey and married to a Turkish man. I am searching about cultural shocks, and how you are dealing with it. It would be wonderful to hear from a mom who is raising a bilingual child. As well as acceptance in the daily society.
Looking forward to hearing from as many people as possible.
Thanks in advance

  1. West Turkey or East Turkey? City or country? There is a difference.

  2. I am since many years living (working) in TR and some of my friends (German, Austrian, American) are married to a Turkish guy but all of them had and have big problems to adapt themselves to the Turkish mentality. One of the biggest problems is the language and religion. In case the man is a Moslem, so the woman has either to convert to Islam or has to face a lot of trouble in bringing up her children, which have to be brought up under the rules of Islam. Furthermore, Turkish men are in every respect very connected to their own parents and eldest family members and would not do anything without their approval/consent.
Raising a child with a Turkish men is also not an easy thing, most of the men want that their kids become ‘Turkish’. The woman has no chance here.
One of the biggest mistake by foreign women is that they believe the man they probably met abroad will behave the same as he did there. But as soon they are back in their home country, they change their behaviours, independent of their education and even longtime stay abroad. It would be even worse if the man comes from the east of the country, in such cases the woman is secondary, a nobody.
But it will also be told that there are exceptions, many women have become happy with a Turkish man. However, I wish all women that decided to marry a Turk and intend to live in Turkey, all the best. God bless them.
