Question by Char K: goats milk for infant?
my baby is 7 months and i’ve been reading a lot about goats milk and the benefits outweighing those of cow’s milk. i know she’s too young to be off formula and i don’t plan on taking her off until she’s at least a year old. i repeat, i know she can’t be off of formula yet. her first birthday is just a few months away so i’ve been looking it up and i can’t find anything negative about it. does anyone have an infant on goat milk? would you recommend it?

  1. My daughter REFUSED formula! when i needed a break from breast feeding in put her on goats milk, its easier to digest than formula for some kids.

  2. Not alot of people know about this, but my sis used to have her own goats that she would milk, until she switched to cows (20 of them). It is the closest to human milk out there. But, you have to be very careful with it. Find a small farm that sells the milk, go and watch their process of milking. Make sure they are very clean in the way they do it..Everything must be clean, they have to wipe the teets, yadda yadda…The faster it gets cold, the better it tastes. If it tastes “goaty”, it’s because it’s either not too fresh (2-3 days max) or they dont get it cold fast enough. The stuff you buy in the stores is horrible. I have tasted it and would not give it to my kids..So, check the website http://www.realmilk.com and see if you can find a local goat milking farm. Farmers know other farmers..There might not be a goat on this site, but if you find a cow person, odds are, they will know of a goat person..So, ask around…
Also, my sil and bro adopted two kiddos and they created their own formula based on goats milk. They had to put extra stuff in there, and she really researched the heck out of it..Good luck

  3. Slow down. I know you had to repeat yourself because of these young mothers and them being brainwashed into thinking babies can only have formula for the first year. I have raised 4 children since birth, I am older. I am old enough to be a lot of these young mother’s mother. Years ago we did things way different and the results were also different. I have seen the changes in when to feed babies change many times over the years. I have found that the earlier you feed them real food, the better eaters they are. No turning their nose up at healthy foods. My first was allergic to most of the formulas, and she was just short of being put on Goat’s milk. They put her on 2% milk, she was 5 months old. She ate food and had a balanced diet, so the formula wasn’t necessary. Turns out the milk worked fine, so the goat’s milk wasn’t necessary. The other children I gave milk right from the get go. All healthy children, all who would eat real foods without a problem. I raised goats with the intention of using the milk, but due to unforseen circumstances, never got to milking them. I now use organic milk because it doesn’t have the hormones. The goats milk is supposed to be very good, but if you are buying it in a can, will have preservatives. It’s also a little expensive and from what I hear doesn’t taste very good. She should be eating some foods now and it IS ok to start her on the milk. If she starts early enough, she will drink the goats milk and not think it icky, unless her taste buds really don’t like it.

  4. if you’re in canada, ALL milk is “organic” because we have different standards and practices.

goat’s milk is fine once she’s over a year old – as long as her diet is balanced and complete, she’s good to go. it’s not some mystical magical fluid – it’s just milk.

and yes, i’m an older mum (22yrs, 19yrs, 15mo) and while my second daughter had to be raised on a home-made formula, i do NOT recommend it because she is now suffering serotonin-related severe depression (common with children exposed too soon to cow’s milk and more common in formula babies than breastfed) and a milk addiction allergy.

but since she’s alive and doing well, i guess you could say the formula was a success.

  6. Both of my children were extremely sensitive to cows milk, so I put them on goats milk for about 6 months to transition them.
It worked great for them, just remember to add the infants vitamin drops so that your baby gets the right amount of nutrients in their diet.
I have no complaints at all about it.
Most stores now sell it in their dairy section.

  7. Goats milk is fine in small amounts at this age. So is cows millk. If she is allergic to cows milk then goats milk may be a better choice — but most people who are allergic to one are also allergic to the other.

Completely your choice. As long as she is still getting most of her nutrition from formula/breastmilk, the ‘solid’ part of her diet (including non-formula/breastmilk beverages) is completely up to you.
