Easy 30 Day Hydroponic Lettuce

I started this hydroponic rail system about 30 days ago, having absolutely zero experience in hydroponic growing. Thru a few basic steps, I was able to grow some perfect hydroponic lettuce. If I could grow lettuce that looks and tastes this good, then you can do it too. It really is that easy. Note: Some people suggest changing the reservoir every 2 weeks or so. In this situation I did not. However, I would not recommend going beyond the time needed to complete the growth of the lettuce. Before starting a new crop, the reservoir SHOULD be emptied, cleaned, and refilled with fresh nutrients and water. The variety of lettuce is Adriana. It is a heat tolerant butterhead lettuce that I purchased from Johnny’s Seeds. The nutrient mix is a combination of a water soluble 4-18-38, calcium nitrate, and Epsom salt that I mixed at a 2-2-1 ratio, with approximately 8 grams of 4-18-38, 8 grams of calcium nitrate, and 4 grams of Epsom salt per 5 gallons of water. Pour it in, turn it on, and let ‘er rip !

  4. Thanks. Growing the lettuce was very easy. I’m gonna try some Pak Choi too, and see how that does.

  5. Thanks. You’re right, those little drippers clog quick. I ended up taking them off and letting it free flow. I’ve been studying AP, but haven’t gotten around to setting up a system yet. Theres just not enough hours in the day to do all the things that I want to.

  7. About 15 gallons or so. I would add 5 gallons when I saw the water level drop down to where the pump might be exposed.

    • There are some Master Blend fertilizer at Amazon.com with the ready mix of 20-18-38. Do you still need to add calcium nitrate and Epson salt to it?

  13. Very nice for your first go-around. Congratulations. Your drip feeder tips are going to clog up anyway from calcium and other nutrients building up. You can keep a small piece of wire handy and every 4 or 5 days, run it through the tip. I quit using feeder tubes because of excessive clogging.

Nice tutorial too. Good job! Soon you’ll have gotten the bug and need an IBC for your reservior!

  22. If you take it outside, do it gradually. Direct sunlight will kill it in a hurry until it gets accustomed to being out there.

  24. Do you have enough light? I saw a study that showed how much more important light was than temperature in flowering tomatoes.

  26. Hello. Your videos are very informative, and I’ve leared a lot from them. Where can I find Masterblend fertilizer? I’m located I’m Virginia, and I’ve checked all the usual suspects (Southern States, nurseries, box stores, etc.) and no one has even heard of it. I’m afraid ordering from their website would be too expensive with shipping costs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and keep up the great work!
