This is one of the beautiful flowers in the garden at the school. They grow many flowers as well as alot of vegetables like corn, beans, squash. They also raise chickens, ducks, and other animals. The children are involved in caring for all these plants and animals.

Question by thehasels: Do ducks make good pets?
Our 5 year old daughter’s kindergarten class is raising 24 ducks in an incubator. When they hatch the kids have the option of keeping one as a pet. Is a duck a good pet for our 5 year old and us as well?
The ducks are mallards. We’ve decided that although we have a big yerd we still do live in town and have a pug so we should pass on the baby ducks. Thank you for your replys. They were very helpful.

  3. Yeah they are ok. If you don’t want them to fly away for the winter and can give them a warm place to be you can clip their wings. But I would first check if there is a law in your state against keeping ducks as pets. a lot of people eat duck eggs instead of chicken eggs.

  6. I’m not sure about that one but make sure that it gets vaccinated and does not have Avian flu because it’s currently deadly.

  8. I like ducks! But it will probably be hard to care for. Where would you keep it? What would you feed it? I think your 5 year old will love a duck, but there are some flaws in this plan. Do what you think is right. I am sure one of those ducks would love to go to a good home! Good luck.

  9. if you have space and no other pets then yes. but little space & cats or dogs is very hard stress on a duck and may cause the duck to die. i would say yes but if you don’t have a lot of space out side then no.

  14. I am not sure what kind your daughter’s class is raising but ducks can make good pets. The best to have are Pekins, the can not fly so no need to clip wings. They are easy to take care of, if you don’t have a pond or water just get a small wading pool and they will use it. They are messy, down will get all over your yard and so will old feathers. They like to eat cut corn (from local feed store) and they love it when you chop up lettuce and put it in the water for them to eat. They are like all pets they need attention. So if you think that your family is willing to give it the attention it needs then I can’t see why it wouldn’t be a great pet. The kids here love to play with the ducks when its warm the play in the water with them a lightly spray them with the hose pipe. Good Luck!
