Do chickens need sunlight?

Question by : Do chickens need sunlight?
Im planning on getting about 10 chickens so we can have our own eggs. Our backyard is mainly trees and the place that has the most room is under our deck. As you can Imagine its fairly dark in their, but sunlight does creep through the cracks. Theres not really another place so will that work? And if it doesn’t, should we get artificial lights, or would that be just as bad?

  2. Yes! All animals need sunlight (daylight animals anyway) its a daily source of vitamins which comes from light, you can’t get it for artificial light! its not the same rays.
Its very unhealthy to keep them in an unlighted area. Most times they will start to molt their feathers and look ratty, its because they’re not healthy. Maybe cutting down one tree to let in at least one spot of light will be beneficial.

  3. they would love light u no, fence off an area in ur backyard its ok if its mostly trees. this invites more bugs and ur eggs will taste better than just corn fed which is not really a healthy diet. just keep their wings clipped and the fence tall and give them shelter. trust me u dont want their smell close to ur house unless u are gonna clean their area everyday
