Question by expressurnerd: Can You Use Anything other than goats milk when weaning puppies?
okay, we have a litter of 8 large breed puppies- golden/labs- and we were given the following forumla for weaning by my grandparents who bred dogs for around 15 years, however, because my parents believe goats milk is too expensive we are looking for an alternative.

here is the recipie:

1 can goats milk[diluted with one can of water]
2 egg yolks
1 tsp of vegtable oil
1 tum[for extra calcium]

i believe things like carnation evaported milk have to much protein for there sotmaches, but if its diluted would it be usable?
as the pups are only 21/2 weeks, i have 4-7 days before this becomes a major issue, but any help or adivce/tips would be appreciated….thanks:]
***the mom is still around, and they will not be fully weaned at 31/2 weeks, however we are going to begin to intorduce the goats milk…, i know to keep the pups till 8 weeks, and yes i know its illegal to sell them before so, however when they have teeth, mom wont want to stay in there very long, as thier long nursing periods are already making her uncomfortable and needle sharp teeth arent very comfy now are they?
they cant be on mothers milk for 8 weeks and then BANG go onto hard puppy chow.***
thank you to those who have replied in a more than positive manner!

  1. try kmr. it is a mother’s milk substitute and is sold in pet stores and can be gotten at vets. ask a vet for advice, too.

  2. KMR is the way to go. It’s what we used when I worked in a pet store and puppies or kittens came in that weren’t weaned.

  3. Evaporated milk would be fine, diluted. The good ole-fashion way,.. pups do need the protein.
Or another route is human baby formula,.. which is costly though.
    Gd. luck.

  4. the super easy way to go (and probally better for the puppy) is to buy milk replacer from the pet store.

  5. I would suggest mother’s milk replacement for dogs. It has all the vitamins and nutrients that puppies need for their growth and health.

  6. Wait! Large breed pups should not be weaned by 3 weeks old. Never have I done so. My pups were always weaned by mom not me.
Your doing things very wrong. Pups need to be with mom and nurse until 4 weeks old then you can introduce puppy mush to them but they still need to nurse too.

The formula that you have listed is one I have never heard of and i would not give it to large breed pups either. The extra calicum alone is very bad.
Why are they not still with mom??? Where is mom????

All pups should stay with mom until 8 weeks old. In many states it is illegal to give away or sell pups before then.

why are you in such a rush to wean these pups? Your only doing them more harm than good by doing so!

  7. is their mother not around? if she is around, those pups will get everything they need from her. offer soft foods so they dont drain the mother. puppy formula is expensive also, if they were small breed pups, i would say that is the way to go. but you would have to buy alot of formula for those big pups. just offer canned foods, and let the mother wean them herself. make sure she is getting enough food and vitamins to sustain herself for the next month or so she nurses. oh thanks for the recipe, i seen it years ago and lost it. it will be a lifesaver some day, im copying it right now :D, and yes goatsmilk is very expensive, but i have a friend who raises pygmy goats, and so i can get it free. too bad your not around here.

  8. Use milk replacer if you can’t afford Goat’s milk.. Which by the way isn’t expensive if you want to give puppies a good start…
I wouldn’t give puppies raw egg, and vegetable oil.. I wouldn’t give them the tums for the calcium either.. What’s the problem with good quality dog food, soaked with water and made into a mash??? Works for everyone else.

  9. We always made a mush of puppy food soaked in powdered milk. You have to keep adding warm milk to it as it soaks in and use a spoon or a mixer set on low to get all of the lumps out of it.

I usually start introducing that as soon as they start toddling around, making it more liquid at first and reducing the amount of extra liquid as they get the hang of it.

I wouldn’t give them egg yolks, veggie oil, or tums.

  10. I have to agree with the above poster who questioned your methods. Until you added the detail which should have been in the original post it sounds like you were trying to wean the pups too early. I’d be alarmed also.
I see no problem with what she posted at all. You have to start them on puppy mush at 4 weeks old. Then you will not need the formula at all. Just soak the puppy food in warm water and then mix it up very well so the pups can lap it up. Mom will wean them her self and then by 6 weeks old they can be eating soaked puppy food entirely.
Just remember to completely ask a question and give better details next time.
