My mother feeding the families hens. You couldn’t get eggs during the war so my mothers family kept hens.

Question by martinez.72819: Am I feeding my dog to much raw chicken?
I’ve been feeding my 2 year old German shepherds 1 quarter in the morning with there kibble’s and the same in the evening time. I don’t want to give them to much of something that would maybe hurt my dogs. Both dogs which are litter mates, A male and female are just a tad on the thin side. A friend told me to feed raw chicken with dry food but didn’t tell me how much chicken. Please advise

  1. You should be giving 2-3% of the dogs’ body weight for a raw diet. They should be eating raw bones and organ meat too, but in smaller percentages than actual meat.

  2. I wouldn’t feed raw and kibble together, since they digest in a different manner and the clash can cause digestive upset. There is no such thing as “too much raw” but there is of course “too much food”. Judge by the weight on your dogs. If you’re feeding a leg quarter daily, then a significant amount of kibble should be removed. I’m not sure of exact measurements, I know that on raw you feed 2-3% of the adult body weight, however I’m not sure that would work correctly with kibble in the equation as well.

  3. Whatever raw percentage you add to the diet, it must be balanced. So that means you have to even out boneless raw food with RMBs (raw meaty bones- like chicken quarters).

Instead of feeding chicken quarters every day, feed 2 days of boneless meat (like beef heart, which is cheap) then every 3rd day feed chicken quarters. Otherwise, it is too much bone and calcium.

Feeding too much bone leads to constpation and problems with that from obstruction to anal fissures, plus the calcium:phosphorus ratio is not balanced, which is necessary for healthy bones.
