advantages of gardening? ?
Question by jc: advantages of gardening? ?
I am writing a proposal for a community garden to be developed in a rough (lower socioeconomic) primary school. Can anyone think of any unique positive benefits of gardening as an occupation in 5-10 year olds?

It will build a lasting pride in their community. I would think that children who are taught very young to take care of their neighborhood would be less likely to vandalize it as teenagers.

Well:
1) Kids get educated on how things grow
2) Kids learn how to create and plan and execute it
3) Kids learn how much things cost – like seed, garden tools, etc.
4) Kids learn the value of hard work/physical labor
5) Kids learn to appreciate working outdoors
6) Kids learn the selling process after harvesting their garden
the list could go on and on…hope those few help you get started.

I do not know about the unique aspects of gardening. I do gardening to bring nature into my back yard. I have enjoyed seeing birds and other insects that I would have not seen otherwise.
Raising flowers that attract the bees and the birds to my backyard that have started to disappear.
I remember a time when I was annoyed by the bees and the noise of certain birds. We do have many more annoying bugs now that the robins and other birds that would have eaten them are not here..
I have not seen a honeybee in my yard this year and I have not seen a simple robin for weeks. And it is no where near time for them to migrate.
If we do not teach our children the importance of these things what will be left for them.
I helped my father plant corn when I was a child, when it came time to harvest I always thought it tasted better than any I had ever had.
It would be great to teach the children the importance of organic gardening.
In a since, I think It creates pride. What children create they are less likely to want to destroy.
